ROXBURGH.
February 4. —Our town is progressing, and has more the appearance of commercial life now the telephone exchange has been effected. Men's Club.—The Men's Club was officially openod by the Mayor (Mr Rohero) on the 2nd inst. The first stroke on the club's billiard table was played by the Mayor. The Mayor said the institution would no doubt be greatly appreciated by members and others. The object of the club is to supply a want to young men in particular, now that the hotels close at 6 o'clock, by providing thern with a, retreat from the street, where they could, have a reading room, a game of billiards, or a game of cards, draughts, etc. The two-story building situated m Scotland street, known as Ormond Jiuildings, was acquired and fitted up for the purpose. The first floor on the left side on entering consists of a reading room, which will be open all day, and a smaller room with table and chairs, whcih is suitable for many purposes, such as committee room,* card party, etc. The third room contains a piano, where friends can indulge in a singsong. The right-hand portion of the ground floor- has not yet been arranged, but will in due time provide probably a refreshment room, which will be much appreciated, and no doubt prove profitable for the institution. The floor so far consists of a well-appointed billiard room with a full-size table. A few forms round the walLs will be" necessary to complete its comfort. Another room, very cosy and convenient, is in order. Other parts of tha building have not been furnished for the present—their future will all depend on the success., of the venture. Fruit. —The fruit season is nearing a close. Many of trie boys from the city, who have been employed in fruit-picking, etc., in connection with the industry, have returned home. "Women- help hag been largely introduced, and as packers of fruit are a decided success. Returned Soldiers. —Many of our local boys have returned from the war zone, some through being wounded, others through sickness. We are srlad to have them back. Settlement. —The public are much gratified at the Government's purchase of the' Teviot Estate. This property is unquestionably suited 11 for closer settlement. The pioneers of this estate made it a desirable country. It has always been occupied by thrifty, progressive men, from Messrs Cargill and Anderson's occupation down to the present. General.—A great number of tourists in motor cars have passed through and visited our town and district this season—not. much distress in New Zealand yet. The Roxburgh Carry Company lias been a boon to the fruitgrowers under the able management of Its manager, Mr J. F. Tamblyn.
