POST OFFICE SAVINGS BANK.
THE DECEMBER RETURNS. WELLINGTON, January 21. The Postmaster-general to-night made available the figures for the Post Office Savings Bank for December, 1917. “It will be seen,” he said, “that there is an excess of deposits over withdrawals of £343,560, as compared with £236,137 for December, 1916. Considering that wo are in the fourth year of the war, and that very heavy withdrawals have been made for the purpose of enabling small depositors to invest in the last wax loan, and in war Joan certificates, it will be scon that this index is a healthy one. Tire total amount of deposits m the month of December was £1,405,511. If that average were maintained for the whole of the year it. would amount to 17 millions. The average may or may not bo maintained, but in any case the figures are a clear indication that there is a considerable amount of money in small amounts in the country available for savings.
