WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL

The meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council, held on Friday, was attended by Messrs Laley (chairman), Orbell, M'Gill, Briscoe, M'Lachlan, and M'Leod. ✓ INSPECTOR'S REPORTS. The county inspector submitted reports on the various ridings, outlining the works completed or in progress. CORRESPONDENCE. The Public Works Department forwarded a voucher for £SOO, being £ for £ subsidy on the amount devoted to Main North road repairs —Received. The Receiver of Land Revenue forwarded a sum of £l4 14s 2d as small: grazing run fourths for the period ended October 31, 1917.—Received. The District Engineer-of Railways wrote with reference to his previous letters in regard to improving the view of the railway- crossing at the south end of Warrington Station, asking if anything had been done in the matter.—The Clerk said ho hud written to the owner, -Mrs Allen, last October, but no action had been taken.— It was decided to ask the District Engineer to meet the county inspector on the ground. The Rev. G. 11. Balfour wrote drawing the attention of the council to the state; of the road from Waitati to Kawanka, and asking if it would be possible to repair one or two specially bad places before the winter.—The Inspector said that an expenditure of £lO 'or so would improve the grading of the cutting mentioned. It would cost about £3OO to metal the whole road. About £ls would do the suggested repairs near Brown's.—lt was decided to instruct the inspector to report on the cost cf "various repairs, and the council could then see what £hp residents affected were prepared to - A. M'Lachlan, lion, secretary of the Purakanui Amenities Society, wrote, enclosing cheque for £5, being the balance of _ the amount promised by the society.—Received. Charles Driver (Mihiwaka) wrote complaining of the nuisance occasioned in the district by cattle and horses roaming at large over the roads. He offered to act as ranger for the district in return for the driving fees.—The matter was left over till next meeting. J. T. Parker (Waikouaiti) wrote asking permission to cut cocksfoot from some of the back roads. —Permission was granted. The Acting-secretary of the Overseas Club wrote making a further appeal for assistance in supplying gift parcels of cigarettes and tobacco to the men at the front. Ins club had already supplied gifts of this nature to the value of £255,000 Received. D. and J. Pullar wrote complaining of the condition of Pullar's road.—The inspector was instructed to report. GENERAL. The Chairman reported that Cr Orbell, Cr Briscoe, and. ho had waited on the Works Committee of the City Council previous -evening regarding contributions ,for a vote to cover maintenance on the Main North road. The committee had promised to consider the case and let the "Waikouaiti Council know the result. The financo report was received and adopted and accounts amounting to £216 18s were passed for payment. On the motion of Cr Briscoe, it was decided that as soon as a surfaceman is available tho read leading from Evansdale to Messrs Warren, Gilmoro, and Joyce's properties be repaired on certain conditions. It was decided to impose a penalty of 10 per cent, interest on all rates outstanding after February 28.
