WELLINGTON NOTES.

(FEOii -Ouk Own Coebespondent.)

January 24. Nobleman won the- Wellington Cup from end to end, beating Red Ribbon, who was similarly placed in the Auckland Cup behind Fiery Cross. Miss De Vay, whoso first attempt it was over such a long journey, finished third. Nobleman, who won the Manawatu Cup on Boxing Day, was handled in a capable manner by H. Young, who won the same race on Pavlova three years ago. Nobleman was raised a stone on the second day. He got chopped out at the start and' was last when they had gone a furlong. He ran from last to second, in about four furlongs. This effort took too much out of him, and he-- finished. fifth. The New Zealand Cup winner, Menelaus, made his" pnly appearance at the meeting in the race. He carried top weight and put up record time for the race. Nanna, a hot favourite for the sprint race on the opening day, compounded when they had gone four furlongs. -Wrestler won in good style from Waimatao,. who went on to Foxton and picked up a stake there. On the second day H Young rode Nanna, who aiever looked like getting beaten. She was certainly meeting Wrestler en nearly a stone better terms than on the first day, but it looks as if the latter was lucky to win. She is a great filly. Hymestra pulled up lame after a gallop on Saturday morning and was not produced at the meeting. The feature of the second day's racing was the defeat of Desert Gold. It looks as if she had lost her brilliance training for , long distance events. Croesus, half brother to Desert Gold, had to put v 'up fast time to defeat the Welcome Stakes winner, but won 'with something to spare. F. Davis was in town to-day arranging the shipment of Desert Gold to Australia. J. O'Shea, who has ridden her in most of her races in the Dominion, informs me he will not ride her in Australia. It is understood the services of W. H. M'Lachlan have been secured. The easiest win at the meeting was scored by Post Haste, a brother to Flying Start, in the Ruapehu Handicap on the opening day. He carries the colours of Mr H. A. Knight, who also won the Douro Cup with Euripos. Paddington. was unlucky enough to' run second each day. His stable mate Robur (Rokeby-Tea Cup), a half sister to Di Gama, was among the second day's ■winners. Robert Bell -was out of his class and was not started on the second day. All the best two-year-olds had a stone, penalty in the Wellington Stakes, in which Finmark, the full brother to Estland, scored his first win.. The runner-up, Demos, carried top weight and won the Fitzherbert Handicap on the second day. Killowen carried lop weight and beat all his opponents in the Nursery Handicap on the first day. Association (Elevation-Black Scotia) paid the biggest dividend at the meeting when he won the Camp Handicap, in which his stable-mate Street Singer ran second. Both horses are trained by H. Telford.
