OTAGO EDUCATION RETURNS.
The quarterly attendance returns for the period ended December 31, 1917, compiled by the Otago Education Board, show that there were 250 schools in operation in the district. The average weekly number of pupils on the rolls during the quarter waj 22,528, comprising 11,677 boys Slid 10,851 §irls. The average attendance was 10,797 oys and 9974 girls, making a total of 20,771, or 395 mora than for the previous quarter, and 86 moro than for the December quarter, 1916.. The averages for the Oamaru school* 'were: North School, 491; South School, 385 ; Middle School,. 171. The averages for the district high schools were: Port Chalmers, 467; Balclutha, 401; Mosgiel, 365; Palmerston; 246; Tokomairiro, 239; Lawrence, 181; Tananui, 173; Alexandra, 172. During the quarter new schools were opened at Dalrachney and Spottis Creek.
