WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL

The ordinary meeting of the Waihemo County Council was held on Saturday; present —Cra Mathieson (chairman), Pilbrow, ■Chapman, M'Lay, Aitcheson, O'Connell, O'Neill, Miller. Prior to the ordinary business being proceeded with, the Chairman referred to the sudden death of Mr Alex. M'Lennan, an old and respected, member of the council, who died recently as the result of a motor accident. A resolution of sympathy was passed by a silent vote, 'the councillors standing. A similar vote was passed to Mr Robert Brown and family on the death of their son, Daniel Brown, who was killed in action at the front.

The County Ranger reported that during tho month 12 head of cattle and four horses found straying in the county had been impounded.—Received. The County Inspector (Mr- M'Williams) reported that general maintenance work had been carried out during the month.— Received.

Sir Joseph Ward telegraphed the season's greetings to the council, and expressed the hopo that tho year 1918 would see peace restored with a pronounced victory for the Allies. —Received; the Minister of Finance to be informed that his good wishes were reciprocated. The Public Works Department advised the council that a subsidy of- £2OO on a pound-for-pound basis had been granted for metalling tho Dunback-Macracs road. —Received ; tenders for the work not to be invited until March.

The Collector of Customs, Dunedin, notified the council that the extract from - the gold declaration lodged with him for the Waihemo County for tho month of November was 330 z, and that for the month of December was 40oz.—Received.

The council decided to erect a signpost at Fleming's Corner stating that tho Horse Range road was now in good order for motor traffic in fine weather. It was also decided that the Otago Motor Association be advised of this" fact. Accounts amounting to £258 were passed for payment.
