The material of which the handsome new staircase at tho Auckland Public Library is constructed is figured serpentine obtained from quarries in West-land, about 24 milea from the Otira tunnel. The quarries ar" on the summit, of Mount Griffon, about 4000 ft; above sea level. The Clutha Free Press states that a swagsman who was engaged by a district farmer on Saturday, evening said ho hail walked all the way from Oamaru looking for work, and was unable to find it. He was a strong, able-bodied man, and professed a knowledge of most kinds of farm work. While enioying his supper at his new employer's place on Saturday night the man said that he had not tasted a potato for ten days, and had slept out every night in the open during that time.
