CONDUCTING A LOTTERY.
AUCKLAND, January 21. Clarcnco Russell and William A. Boyd were charged to-day -with conducting an illegal lottery at the Auckland show. The evidence was that accused offered to conduct a surprise packet scheme in aid of tho Save the Babies Fund, the chairman of the fund accepting the offer, but telling the accused that they must themselves obtain permits. This they failed to do. Accused, who wore masks and fancy costumes, asserted that tho packets contained winning numbers in tho proportion of 90s for every 100 sold. Complaints were mado to the police that a few peoplo seemed to bo gaining all tho prizes, and tho police stopped the salo, impounding £l7 18s in the box containing tho percentage for the fund. Tho police stated that Russell and Boyd had previous records of offences. Boyd, who had served on Gallipoli, was fined £2, and Russell was fined £l.
