Goodchild and E. W. .Stewart, of the New Zealand Voluntary Aid Detachments, had been gazetted as members of the Order of the British Empire. Herbert, left in charge of tho Fifth Reinforcements, and Mrs Stewart and Miss Hdrbert shortly after wont to Cairo. There, although they had no previous knowledge of nursing, they quickly qualified in that capacity. Tho valuablo work they did in Cairo is spoken of in terms of unstinted admiration by the many soldiers who came under their care. After tho evacuation of GalWpoli both ladies went to Franco, and after a time travelled to England, where they havo been employed ever since in the Brockenhurst Hospital. In many other ways they havo assisted in tho activities for the welfare and comfort of the sobUers. Their work has been a labour of love; its chief reward is tho unbounded gratitude of the soldiers who havo come tinder their tender care. From tho Wellington papers wo learn that two of these recipients of the distinction aro Miss Violet 8011, youngest daughter of Sir Francis and Lady Bell, and Miss Agnes Pearce. younger daughter of Mr and Mrs Arthur Pearce, of both of whom have been doing war work in England for some time past.
