MILITARY SERVICE ACT.
A RELIGIOUS OBJECTOR. TAUMARUNUI, January 12. Arthur Jones, a religious objector, who escaped from the prison at Rotoaira, and was recaptured on Thursday at Raurimu, made a second escape last evening. When the gaoler was driving the prisoner in the prison trap from Waimarino station ho had to get out to open the gates. Johns saw an opportunity io escape, grabbed the reins, drove for three miles, and escaped to the bush. The prisoner was again captured last night, and brought to Tuumarunui to-day for trial before justices, when he was sentenced to a further 12 months' imprisonment in Mount Eden gaol. The prisoner, who was formerly sentenced to two years, made statements in tha court that ho was always prepared to do ncncombatant work here or in France, but not under military control. He was afraid that under military control he might be called on to carry ammunition to kill people, and the Bible said, "Thou sbalt not kill.
