DEATH OF MR CHARTERS.

A PECULIAR ACCIDENT.

The death occurred at the Duriedin Hospital on Friday evening of Mr W. J, J,Charters, of Mosgiel. Ho was admitted to the institution suffering from bloodpoisoning, as the result of a scratch on the head from a tree commonly known as a/ " monkey puzzle," and died a few hours after being admitted. The deceased gentleman was tho son of the late Mr IVibert Charters, one of the oldest residents of tho Taieri. -Ho was a well-known breeder of shorthorn cattle, and he produced somo' of the finest fat stocdc ill! the South Island Ho was also a breeder of Clydesdales, and was prominent as a judge of draught horses and cattle. He took a keen interest # m racing, and has on more than one occasion been a steward ot the Dunodan Jockey Club. In addition, he ./was a member of tho Taieri and the Otago A. and P. Societies. At the last Taieri show, held at Allanton, he was a competitor in the light horse events. He was president of tho Otago A. and P. Society in 1909, having been a member since 1896. A little more than a year ago he purchased a fairly large farm in the Middlemarch district, and he worked] this in addition to his Taieri property. He was held in general esteem, and will ba missed by a wide circlo of friends, whosal sympathy will he extended to his widow. Tho iloss of his capable oversight and interest in any work pertaining to the advancement of Otago is to bo deplored.
