PENINSULA SHOW

The fortieth annual show, held under the auspices of the Otago Penisula A. and P. Society, took place at Portobcllo on Saturday.. 'Several heavy showers of rain which fell between mid-day and 2 o'clock interfered with the attendance, which was. as a consequence, much smaller than usual. The entries in some of the sections were not so numerous as formerly, but nevertheless there was a creditable exhibition of horses, cattle, and dairy produce, the quality being well maintained throughout. The management of the show left little to be desired, the secretary (Mr- S. Hinldey) having .matters well under control. The draught horse section was a higlhy creditable one, particularly the section for working horses. There was only one entire forward, that of Mr W. Cowan, which was awarded first prize. He expressed himself as being specially pleased with the winner in the three-year-old gelding class, which was exhibited by Mr M.*Geary7 and which, in his opinion, was a superior animal to the horse which won in Christchurch and Dunedin shows this year. The hack section was an interesting one. although tho entries in some of tho classes were not as good a One would have expected. Mr P. Toomoy (Waikouaiti) judged the section, but his decisions in some of the classes were adversely criticised by men on the outside of the ring. The brood mare class was won by Mr G.- Booth, Mr J. H. The cattle section wasf not as good as one might have expected at a show held on the Peninsula. There were no Shorthorns forward, although this breed was provided for in the scheclule. Ayrslnres were well represented, although competition was somewhat restricted. Mr James M'Gresor (Taieri), who judged Ayrshires at Waikouati on tho previous day, performed a similar duty at Portobello. He expressed himself as well pleased with the animals adjudicated upon, and considered that the young cattle especially were worthy of special commendation. Messrs_ Weir Bros, and Mrs C. Weir were the principal prizetakers, Messrs J.' Grainger, C. Hall, John Prydc, and Jas. Weir each gained a prize. Ilellyer (NorthEast Harbour) was tho only exhibitor, and anoxed the whole of the prizes. The quality of tho exhibits need not be commented on, as Mr Hcllyer's Jerseys are known from

Auckland to Invercargill, and the; fact that he exhibited his best on Saturday is evidence that the quality was all that could be wished for. Some /rood Fresians were forward. Messrs T. Morris, A. Morris, and F. E. Hellyer were the exhibitors The two first-named won all the prizes in the male section, and the last-named in cows. The male championship was awarded to Mr Morris's_ three-year-old bull, and the female championship to Mr Hellyer's cow. Crossbred cattle were not numerous, but somo good-quality animals were shown. Nyhon (Sandymount) and Mr Bowman (Dunedin). The butter classes were pronounced to be specially good, and a deal of the domestic cookery would have done credit to an exhibition of greater pretensions. There was keen competition in the baking section. Miss Jessie Geary was first and sccod in girdle scones, and Miss M. Geary third. In oven scones Miss M. Geary was first and second.
