HOTEL WORKERS' WAGES.
EFFECTS OF SIX O'CLOCK CLOSING CHRISTOHURCH, December 15.
Tho Arbitration Court was occupied today in hearing an application for increased wages by the Christchurch Hotel Workers' Union. In the course of individual statements made regarding increased expenditure due to the war and on the effect of 6 o'clock closing, one hotelkcepcr said that hi* business had decreased 39 per cent, in the first week in December. There had been a general reduction in business, Warner's Hotel reporting a 34 per cent, decrease, and the estimate for 18 leading hotels in Christchurch and suburbs for the first fortnight of this month showed that the sale of aerated waters had decreased 36 per cent., compared with the same period last year. The loss through 6 o'clock closing was set down by one witness at from 20 to 50 per cent, of their profits. In the circumstances the employers contended that a new award with increased wages- at present would bo unfair. The court reserved its decision.
