QUINNAT SALMON FISHING.

THE NEW REGULATIONS. The regulations relating to quinnat salmon fishing wore gazetted on tho 28th. They should be generally acceptable to the acclimatisation societies interested, as well as to anglers, as they are the result of modifications obtained by the delegates from' the Canterbury and North Otago Acclimatisation Societies at their recent conference with the Minister of Marine, by whose department the quinnat salmon fishing will bo controlled. For the present the Waitaki and Rangitata are declared salmon rivers, and the angling season for these two rivers will end on April 15, or on the Tuesday next after Easter Monday, if it falls on a date later than April 15. in any year. A salmon license shall only be issued to the holder of a trout license, which must be produced and endorsed. The salmon license for men will be- 10s, for women and boys ss, and r or non residents of Now Zealand £l. Free licenses for both trout and salmon may be issued to invalided convalescent soldiers on tho recommendation of the District Health Officer. In tho salmon rivers the season when trout may be taken begins on the first day of October, and the season when quinnat salmon may be taken begins on January 15 (that is to say, that anyone fishing in the Waitaki or Rangitaia rivers on or after ■ that date must hold a salmon as well as a trout license). Licenses to fish for salmon are to be issued by the postmasters,-at Christchurch, Dunedin, Oamaru, Waimate, Timaru. Temuka, Winchester, and Ashburton. The number of salmon an angler may take in ono day is limited to six, and every licensed salmon angler shall keep a record of the number of salmon caught by him and furnish a monthly return during the fishing season to tho Secretary of the Marine Department. During the salmon angling season—from January 15 to April 15 —salmon caught at sea by hook and line by fishermen who are owners of a licensed fishing boat may be sold. During the salmon spawning season - that' is, from April 15 to G dy 31 —no nets cf any kind shall be used at the mouth rf certain rivers or streams (specified), or inside the mouth of" any river which 13 'being stocked with quinnat salmon by the Marine Department. The penalties for breaches of these regulations are to be not less than £2, or more than £SO. provided that in the case of any person found guilty of taking salmon or trout illegally during their spawning season, or of any person who uses dynamite or other explosive substanoe for the purpose of killing salmon or trout, the minimum penalty shall not be less than £lO.
