This littLo geni may not be new to readers, but cannot fail fo please all who solve it.

GAMES. The following games were play-eel by telegraph in the match between the Otago and Tima.ru Clubs. The first two were played at the top board, between Messrs J. A. Boreharn (Otago) and J. Munro (Timaru). Game 8556 —"Glasgow." Black: "Munro. White: Boreham. 11 15 25 22 16 19 10 7 20 27 29 25 23 19 7 16 23 16 16 20 31 24 23 27 811 22 18 12 28 7 3 610 32 23 22 17 9 14 21 17 11 15 24 19 18 27 11 16 18 9 8 12 8 7 10 14 25 22 24 20 5 14 17 14 15 19 16 27 31 15 24 28 24 12 16 7 11 14 18 7 2 20 11 4 8 10 7 15 18 16 11 28 32 716 26 23-A 211 11 15-B 5 9 2 6 27 11 10 15 14 10 18 23 11 7 82 27 3 7 19 10 15 19 15 24 914 610 And Black 'is just right for the draw by 14 "18. _ '' (a) I don't remember seeing this move played before. I am inclined to think it will draw. 8 11, 29 25 would come into M'Kerrow's play.—J. A. B. (b) Mr Munro says 11 16 would win here, but I oan't find it with a casual look at the position.—J. A. B. Game 3557—."Cr055." Black: Boreham. (a) I prefer 17 13. (b) 30 26 seems stronger. (c) From here to the finish White's play is very confinedi. (d) I looked carefully at 3 8, but preferred text move. (e) I made a full calculation here. The recollection of Fife's problem in Gould's book kept me on the right lines. (f) The obange that takes place between this king and the man on 3 is worth more than a passing glance.—J. A. B. Game 8558. —"Defiance." Black: Shanks. Looks best; a fair exchange. (b) 6 9 looks good enough to hold the advantage of a man up. (c) The fatal move; anything else draws. Black wins nicely. DRAUGHTS MATCHES. TIMARU v. OTAGO CLUB. The telegraphic match between the Timaru and Otago Clubs was concluded on Saturday night, 'the result being a decisive victory for tho Otago Club. We feel sure, however, that the match was fully enjoyed in Timaru; it certainly was in Dunedin. Several messages were exchanged during the evening, and all Tevealed a fine sporting spirit in the Timaru team. As a sample, Mr Munro (who won from Brodie last year) congratulated Mr Boreham on his win in their second game, and said he had enjoyed the tussle immensely and hoped to meet the winner in person some day. The two old-timers, Messrs S. Crook and D. Halpin, each sent down their little joke, and received replies in a similar strain; so that all went merrily as a wedding feast. Following are the complete scores: Wins. Otago. Draws. Timaru. Wins. 1 J. A. Boreham 1 J. Munro 0 1 J. M'Kinnon ... 1 P. C. Barkei ... 0 2 J. B. Shanks ... 0 S. Crook 0 1 A. Boss 1 I>. TTnlpin 0 1 W. "We have to congratulate Tiniarii on their improved arrangements for the transmission of play last Saturday. Play proceeded for over three hours beforo the first mistake occurred, and replies in nearly all cases camo through promptly. At a number of Otpgo boards the players had their replies written out in anticipation, so that the suipervisor merely exchanged' slips and the replv was throucb in Tirnaru in less than two mmutes. Mr CardvLO operated at this end, and his speed, accuracy, and pleasant bearing right through contributed in no small measure to the oleasnre of the match. Mr Jos. Aber•aethy, supervising on behalf of Timaru. had very little to worry him owing to the absence of mistakes on Saturday. Play was concluded about 11.45, but even that late hour did not

seem to disturb the tireless Otago secretary, Mr J. B. Shanks, who worked like a whole team to make things go. He Is "it." ANDERSON'S BAY v. OTAGO.
