Though there is no real activity in the stock market, sheep continue to change hands at good prices. Sales are, however, generally confined to comparatively small fines; but the transactions of the week include a line of 1000 breeding ewes, in lamb, composed of two, four, and sixtooth in equal proportions, with a small addition of eight-tooth, the price all over being _ 40s. Other sales were made at the following prices:—Halfbred ewes of mixed ages, 355; mixed lines of four, six, and eight-tooth and full and failing-mouth ewes, with lambs, for forward delivery, 23s and 245, all counted; failing-mouthed ewes, in lamb, 365; ewe hoggets, 335; mixed eexhoggets, from 30s to 339, according to quality and proportion of ewes; wether hoggets, 27s 6d; fat wethers, 465; forward wethers, from 34s to 36s 6d. The only business reported in cattle outside of odd animals has been in yearlings of mixed sexes, which have brought from £4 10s up to £5 ss, in lines and according to class. SOUTHLAND STOCK MARKET. (From Ot;» Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, September 8. In stock the market remains firm for all classes, and business continues to be good. Several sales have been held during the week, the principal ones being at Wmton, Wairio, Dipton, and the usual weekly Wal lacotown sale. At all . sales there was a largo entry, store sheep being .the most prominent, Winton yarding some 8000 sheep, Dipton 2000, and Wairio 1500. The yurding at Winton was a very large one for the time of the year, but the drop in prices, which wns confidently expected on this account, failed to eventuate, the whole yarding being cleared at the current high prices. The quality forward was good, especially the hoggets. Ewes have not been in such keen demand, graziers at present showing a preference for dry sheep. In store cattle a large number of dairy cows and young cattle have changed hands, dairy corns selling specially well. In the fat stock market both classes show practically no variation. Values are as follows :

Fat Cattle.—Ox beef, 46s 6d to 483 6d; heifer beef, 44s to 46s 6d; cow beef, 43s to 44s 6d. ADDINGTON STOCK MARKET. September 5

At Addington to-day there were moderate yarding-s of almost all classes of stock, and there was a large attendance of buyers for store sheep. The bset market opened easif-r, but firmed up to last week's rates. Fat sheep opened at about la per head in advance of the jirevic-us week's rates, but eased a little towards the end. There was a small entry of fat 'ambs, and only about one-half were sold, the others failing to reach the owners' value. Store sheep were in keen demand, and prices were firm, hoggets showing a rise of about Is per head. Store cattle were in better demand, and all classes of pigs sold well. Fat Sheep.—33o7 penned, a, very considerable proportion of which wens light and unfinished wethers. For saich, competition was no time keen, and sheep of this class fell in price about la to Is 6d per head, compared with last week. A small proportion of the yarding consisted of prime wethers, with a few pens of extra heavy sheep. All these sold well at prices better than last week. Exporters are still out of the market, and there were few graziers present to assist in clearing unfinished sheep. The only business doing in the looal market is in potatoes. There have been a number of inquiries from Auckland, but the prices offered have not met merchants' views. The Wellington market appears to bo a little easier, judging from the tone of letters received by merchants. There is a fairly large quantity of potatoes offering by growers, and several merchants who bought considerable quantities last week are now inclined to ease off. These purchases were made, in many instances, at £3 at country stations, and at £3 5s in store. There are few sellers at present at less than £3 5s at country stations, and sonic are asking £3 7a 6d. RABBITSKIN SALES. Tho Dunedin Woolbrokers? Association (Messrs Dalgety and Co., National Mortgage and Agency Company, New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Otago Farmers' Co-operativo Association, Donald Reid and Co., Stronach, Morris, and Co., and Wright, Stephenson, and Co. report: Tho usual sales were held on Monday, when very largo catalogues were submitted. This was due to the fact that the sales had been postponed owing to lack of shipping space. Notwithstanding this, prices on the whole were good, and very few lots were passed in. All inferior grade skins and good quality does showed a slight advance, but bucks were correspondingly down in price.
