LUMSDEN.

. September 10.—Beautiful spring weather is being experienced now, and the call of the garden is evident all around tho township, the residents making ready their ground and planting early potatoes and other vegetables.

Concert.—A very enjoyable Red Cross concert was presented by Mrs W. H. Clark and her music pupik last Friday evening. The night was beautifully fine, and the hall was crowded. The fund benefited to the extent of £2O.

Local Affairs.—The Town Board, which has been nearly two years in existence now, has so far done nothing to show that its members recognise their responsibilities to iheir electors, arid, beyond raising the rates, have done nothing to justify their existence.

Good Service.—Sergeant Maurice Crawford, of this town, has just sent to his people a very interesting parchment certificate which is a tribut to his soldierly qualities. It is a record of good service, very neatly printed. The sergeant lias had a remarkable record. He left New Zealand with the Main Body in August, 1914, was tliiougb all tin fighting on Gallipoli, went to France With the and has shared in all the fighting there', including tho great battles of the Somme and Messines. It is marvellous lo record that, although this soldier has had his 'iclmet shot away twice, bullet holes thiough his coat collar and tunic, and been buried by shell explosions twice, he has escaped injury, and, with the exception of a slight, attack of dysentery, has also enjoyed good health.

Personal.—Corporal Albert Eeid, of this bmded at Dunedin last week on his way home from France, and was removed to hospital for treatment prior to coming to his home. Corporal Eeid had his leg badly broken by a rifle shot.
