KAITANGATA COURT.

KAITANGATA, September 7. In the court at Kaitangata on Thursday, before Messrs Joseph Smith and W. D. Carson, J.P.'s, the following business was disposed of:—Driving a vehicle without a light, Robert Ramsay was fined ss, with costs (7s); C. A. "V iekers, for riding a bicycle on the footpath, was fined 2s 6d, with costs (7s); and John Ramsay, for a similar offence, was fined a like amount. Henry Cornish pleaded not guilty to a charge of allowing cattle to wander. Constable Mar-tin stated that defendant's cattle were repeatedly allowed to wander, and when approached on this occasion defendant had questioned the constable's rights in laying the information. Defendant stated that he left the cattle for a short space, but he contended that he was in charge of the animals. On the constable's application, the case was adjourned for hearing before a magistrate. Defendant left the court, and returned with the request that the case be settled then. He pleaded guilty and was convicted and ordered to pay costs (7s). S. M'Kenzie and Joseph M'Neill Gray were charged with being drunk on the Dunedin-Clinton train. Evidence was tendered by Constable Martin and Herbert Gladwin, guard on the train. Drunkenness had been fairly rife on the train, and great annoyance was caused to passengers. Constable Martin asked that substantial penalties bo imposed as a deterrent to future offences of the kind. M'Kenzie was convicted and fined 20s, with costs (7s), and Gray was fined 40s, with costs (£1 0s 6d).
