LAKE COUNTY.
September 8. —Very heavy rain foil on Wednesday last., but since then the weather has been fine. Farmers are now busily engaged in putting in their spring crops. Deaths.—News was received in Arrowtown last. week of the death at Gore, on August 30, of Mr Bernard Ruehton, who was a resident of this district for many years. Deceased arrived in this district over 50 years ago, and acted as storeman for Mr W. T. Smith at Mace-town and Arrovvtown for a considerable time. He afterwards worked for Messrs Cotter Bros., at Arrowtown, and about six years ago went with his family to Gore, where he has since resided. During his long residence in this district the late Mr Rushton was held in the highest respect and esteem by all classes of the community. Of a quiet and retiring disposition, his chief joy and comfort was in his home and aboiit his own work. He* leaves a family of live daughters and three eons. The youngest son (George) is at the front, and the second son (Alfred) is in camp. —The death took place at the Lake County Hospital, Frankton, cm Saturday last, _of Mr John Watson, crie of the few'remaining pioneers of the Wakatipu. Deceased was 82 years of age, and was a native of County Galway, Ireland. He arrived in this district in 1862, and engaged in mining at the Shotover. He was unmarried and spent the latter part of his life at Arthur's Point. The funeral took place at Queenstown on Monday, the burial service being conducted by the Rev. Father Corcoran. General. —Mr T. J. Healy has disposed of his farm at Malaghans to Mrs M'Lcan. of Drummond, Southland.—Mr Healy has purchased a farm at Mossburn. and he and his mother and sister will bo leaving for their new home in about a fortnight's time. The Healy farmily will be greatly missed in this district, and the best wishes of many friends will go with them for their future success.
County Council. —An ordinary meeting of the Lake County Council was held at Queenstown, on Wednesday last, when the business transacted was of a routine nature.
Personal.—News was received in Arrowtown to-day that Private D. J. Cosgrove, •who was reported wounded on the 16th August, rejoined his unit on the 19th August.
