SERIOUS CHARGE AGAINST A MAORI.
ACCUSED COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. AUCKLAND. September 3. A Maori named Jack Pihana pleaded "Not guilty''and was committed for trial on a charge of killing James White Hooker on August 10, and with causing actual bodilyharm by an act of negligence to Hooker. The evidence showed that Pihana, who is alleged to have committed a nuisance in the street, was being pursued by a _constable, and ran on to the footpath, colliding with Hooker. The latter, who complained of pains in the abdomen and legs, was conveyed to the hospital, where he died IS hours' later. The medical evidence was to the effect that death was due to a rupture of a cyst on a kidney and hemorrhage, and that probablv a little force from a collision would cause the l-upture.
