With the advent of spring there is more inquiry for sheep, but as yet business remains small, the time being inopportune for moving breeding ewes. The first transaction in ewes with lambs is reported, the sale being one of 400 crossbred ewes at 20s 6d, all counted, with delivery in September. Other business in sheep has been done at the following prices:—Full-mouthed ewes, in lamb, 255; ewe hoggets, 335; small ewe hoggets. 28s; mixed-sex hoggets, 28s 6d; small mixed-sex hoggets, 26s 9d and 275"; wether hoggets, 27s Cd; fat wethers. 425; fat and forward wethers. 375; forward wethers. 345; four and six-tooth store wethers, 33s 6d. There has been more business passing in cattle than for some time past, the sales including a few lines of fair proportions? Business in stock continues to be good, although, as is customary between the seasons, it is somewhat quiet. The market, however, still remains firm, and anything offered meets with a ready sale. There is still a considerable quantity of turnips to be eaten off, and as tho grass is now beginning to s'r&tv some growth, store stock is in good demand, cattle being probably the better 'of the two classes. Good hoggets and wethers meet with a ready sale at similar prices to those of the . last few weeks. Values may bo quoted:— Fat Cattle.—Ox 'beef, 45s 6d to 48s 6d; heifer beef, 44s to 46s 6d; cow beef. 43s to 44s 6d.

Fat Sheep.—Extra heavy butchers' wethers, 41s to 42s 6d; prime. 38s to 40s; medium and good, 36s to 38s. ADDIXGTOK STOCK MARKET. CHRISTCHURCH, August 29. At tho Aldington stock market there wore smaller yardings of stock in nearly all departments. Fat cattle, although of moderate quality, were irregular, but firmer, and prime was up to 60s per 1001 b. Hoggets formed the larger proportion of the entry of store sheep, and these were easier, while wethers brought late rates, and the few ewes offered sold irregularly. Fat sheep were very firm at an advance of about Is Gd per head on the previous week's rates. Store cattle sold well considering their quality, and pigs were dear. The Central Produce' Mart (Limited) report :—O'ur market is barely supplied with fruits of all descriptions. Oranges from Rarotonga realised phenominal prices, and we are afraid that citrus fruits will bo very much dearer unless communication with Australia is re-established during the coming week. Cooking and dessert apples have realised good values. Choice cauliflowers and cabbages are wanted. Separator butter is in keen demand. Eggo are selling freely at Is 3d for stamped and guaranteed. On Wednesday a keen demand was experienced for all lines of poultry, especially for •cockerels, turkeys, and ducklings. Chaff is in keen demand, and during the week we were able to effect sales on a, basis of £6 15s per ton. Supplies of asparag-us and rhubarb are wanted. Onions arc scarce. The' interruption of shipping between New Zealand and Australia, through the Australian strike, has nut a number of millers in the awkward position of having to close down or run on single shifts, owing to the. scarcity of wheat. One of the large mills in Chiistchurch has closed down, and another is curtailing its output of flour. Only small odd lots of wheat are to be obtained, but it is known that a large line, including two seasons' wheat, is still held by one grower. "Bran and pollard are very scarce.
