OTAGO EXPANSION LEAGUE.
The executive meeting of the Otago Expansion League was held on the 28th ult. The president (Mr A. Bathgate) and a good many members attended. Correspondence received from the Tourist Bureau with an offer of assistance in republishing one of the league's guide books was referred to the Publicity Committee, and members expressed their gratification at the result of the negotiations.
Mr Bathgate and Mr Crosby Morn's were elected delegates to the conference to lie held in regard to the question of land tenures.
The question of suburban trains came up for fresh discussion, and a remit is to bo forwarded to the Hon. the Minister of Railways on the subject. A member quoted the following: "Queensland has adopted a curtailed railway service, but has dono better than New Zealand, in that where trains have been taken from suburban lines, motor commercial vehicles ha-vo been fitted with wheels to run on. tlie steel rails, and thoso are used very much as trains for carrying passengers at night They have proved to be very economical, and do away with the necessity of a railway station staff, for each vehicle carries a driver and conductor. The latter collects the fares." A communication on the subject of the flat rate on consignments from or to Dunedin and TMtelfcon in the new contract for the trans-Paeifio steamer was adopted and ordered to bo forwarded to Wellington. The balance sheets and reports were presented and will be publisher! in the annual report. The annual meeting will bo held towards the end of next 'month.
