TO STAND The Season At ELDERSLIE.

The Thoroughbred Siro WINKIE (imp). Winkle was one of the heaviest-engaged three-year-olds in England in 1915. and it is certain that, but for the war, he never would have come to New Zealand. He was got by William the Third, one of the very best racehorses and sires left by the Great St. Simon, who got winners of over £554,000 during 1889 and 1912, proving himself the greatest sire known. In their first eight seasons on the turf William the Third’s stock won over £102,329, and he is the sire of Willony (standing at 300 gs), Nassau, Roseland, King William, Trois Temps, Nassovian, and other good performers. Winkie was got by William the Third (son of St. Simon) from Conjure, by Juggler from Connie, by Pero Gomez (winner Middle Park Plate and St. Legerl from Hilarity, by King Tom, the sire of St. Simon’s dam and half-brother to Stockwell. Ho belongs to the No. 1 family, which produced such great horses as Lord Lyon, Minting, Neil Gow, Prince Palantine, Robert the Devil, Spearmint, Swynford, Chelandry, Ladas, and in all the largest number of classic winners in the Stud Book. Winkie comes in direct female line from the great Penelope, the dam of Whalebone and Whisker, and it is quite safe to say no other mare in the English Stud Book has given more numerous or more continuously successful descendants on cither the turf or at the stud. Winkie’s sister Winkipop won over £12,000 in stakes, and his brother Pilliewinkie, out of six starts, won the Triennial Produce Stakes at Newmarket and the Ascot Derby, beating good horses on both occasions. 'Winkie’s dam Conjure, is a half-sister to Merry Wife, the..dam of Santoi, who won £II,OOO in etakes, and at present one of the best sires in England, and who had a full list at 200 gs in 1915.
