DUNEDIN COMPETITIONS

ANNUAL FESTIVAL. FIRST DAY—WEDNESDAY. The Dunedin Competitions Society's annual festival for the year 1917 was started on the 29th in Burns Hall. The contests in the day time did not attract a very large number of patrons, but there was a fairly full house in the evening, when the performers recalled wore Heard. The society is fortunate in having secured the services of Mrs Moutague as accompanist; that lady, it is understood, having experienced some difficulty in getting away from the city she has of late years made her homo to act in her usual official capacity. The judges are Messrs Harold Gregson and J. F. Montague, both of Auckland, the former judging the vocal and instrumental and the latter the elocution.

Mr G. W. M'lntosh (vice-president) pre eided in the evening, and in the course of a few remarks apologised for the absence of the Mayor (Mr J. J. Clark), whose absence placed him in the position of having to make an impromptu speech. The society had had an uninterrupted term of 16 years, but unfortunately its objects had not been accomplished—the establishing of scholarships for those competitors who had shown merit or had distinguished themselves. The society oped that the citizens would come forward and help to get it out of its little difficulties. The amount it was behind was not very much, and the society could easily bo placed in a sound financial position. Messrs Gregson and Montague gave brief speeches, the latter paying a tribute to the assistance reudercd to the society by the late Mr F. J. Stilling. Referring to the opinion that such competitions should not be held during the war, he said a good answer lay in the fact that in Christchurch £220 had been handed over to a society as a result of one of these competitions.
