Information has been received by the Defence authorities that Lieutenant Spencer
G. Smith, who left Now Zealand in September last with the 17th Reinforcements, was gazetted as captain, and has been appointed one of tho instructors to the Second Army Corps. Captain Smith is the youngest son of Mr S. G. Smith, of the Government Life Insurance Department, Dunedin, and was admitted to tho Bar by the late Sir Joshua Williams. On Monday Mrs Pow received the D.S.O. decoration presented to her husband at Buckingham Palace by his Majesty the King. Major Pow received the honour for gallantry in the Somme fight, in which, after being wounded and lying unconscious for about a quarter of an hour, he came to in time to gather up half a dozen men and hold on to a difficult position until reinforcements could be hurried up. In his latest letter ho stated that he expected to be back in France very shortly. Major Pow was held back, after enlisting, to go away with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade. He also fought in the Boer war. At the time of his enlistment he was a teacher at the Otago Boys' High School, having previously been engaged on the staff of the Southland High School.
