PREVENTION OF CRUELTY.
Tho regular meeting of the Otago Society for the JL J revcntion of Cruelty to Animals, held on the 17th inst., was presided over by the president (Mr G. Fenwick). Mr D. E. Thcomin wrote resigning his position on the committee owing to additional business responsibilities having been thrown upon him.—The resignation was accepted with regret. It was reported that Mr Baird' (Arrowtown) had become a life member. A letter was received from the Southland Society expressing the opjnion that all districts" south of the Mataura River, being part of Southland, shoul'd be under the jurisdiction of the Southland Society. As their last inspector got a good deal of support last year at Gore it was their intention to send tho new inspector there to try what could be done. If they could secure now members who would not join the Otago Society they would be doing good work for tho cause generally. Considering that the Otago Society was strong financially it would be a gracious act to concede them the Gore district or at all. event* allow them to make a fair trial of what they could do there—The Chairman said the Otago Society Was putting no hindrance in tho way of the Southland Society making what progress it could.—The letter was referred to a special sub-committee to deal with.
