April 10. —The recent heavy rains have had a most beneficial effect on the grass and turnips. Thrashing is now over, but the c ha Kent ter is still busy. Potato-digging is in full swing, the. crop turning out very well. The Hirers Commission. —i armors are view-
ing with alarm tho huge expenditure which the recent Commission .advocated in dredging 1 the Waipori and Taieri Rivers. The present drainage taxes aro already a heavy burden on the landowner. It is to ho hoped that !he member, Mr Scott, will bestir himself and visit this end of his electorate and find out himself the- position of affairs before anything further is done in the matter.
Off to the Front.—A send-off social to Privates 'Snow, S. Young, and B. Hayes, who were down on final leave from I'rcntham, was held on Tuesday evening, when there was a good attendance of the public. Solos were rendered by Mrs M'Bryde, Messrs Roberts and Draper, and recitations by Misses Withers and Blair. A short dance brought the social to a close.
