WEEK'S MINING NEWS

April 12. The Rise and Shine No. 1 dredge found

no improvement in the ground last week. The bottom was white clay, with a little coal in one corner," but without any wash on any part of it. The No. 2 dredge worked on a soft sandstone bottom in one portion, of tho cutr and on clay in the remainder of it. The wash was very tight, and carried a large number of stones. The secretary of the Nokomai Hydraulic Sluicing Company reports that No. 2 started sinking on Saturday. At No. 3 all the plant has been removed out of the paddock. Tho sluice boxes and trestles were down, and part of the main line of pipe disconnected. On Saturday all hands went to No. 1 claim, overhauling the main lino of pipe. Everything was ready to put water in it on Monday. April 13. The gold production in Victoria for tho week ended March 24 amounted to 16430 z 4dwt. The principal producers were: Hercules and Energetic, 116 oz 6dwt; Koch's Pioneer, llloz 19dwt; Lansells' Little No. 180, 990 z 15dwt; Virginia, 86oz lldwt; Windmill Hill, 78oz 16dwt; Great Northern, 760 z 9dwt; Johnson's Reef, 690 z sd\vt; Carlisle, 58oz I2dwt; New Red, White and Blue, 530 z 6dwt; Bendigo Dredge, 50oz lOdwtThe output of the Mount Lyell M. and R. Co. (Tasmania) for tho two four-weekly periods, ended respectively on February 14 and March 14, was as follow, the February figures being those in parentheses:—Oro treated 20,349 (18.103) tons.—viz.. Mount Lyell ore 13,124 (11,592) tons; North Lyell ore. 7083 (6176) tons, and concentrates, 142 (335) tons. Blister copper produced, 490 (423) tons, containing 484 (418) tons copper, 25.388 (22,180) oz silver, and 539 (470) oz gold. In tho earlier period only two furnaces' wore in commission. April 14. During March the Talisman Consolidated Company crushed and treated 1490 tons of ore, yielding bullion valued at £10,400 Os 9d. Compared with the return for the corresponding period last year, when 1170 tons yielded £4705 Is 6d, this shows an increase of £5694 19s 3d. The total bullion won from tho mine to date is £2,666,957 0s Id. The costs for the past month totalled £3 9s lOd, made up as follows:—Mine development, £1 2s Id; mining, £1 Is lid; milling, £1 Os id; general expenses, 5s 9d. The following is a copy of a cablegram sent to tho London office of the company:—"No. 16 level, north drive: Progress, 44ft. West crosscut, off south drive, 57ft." April 16. Tho Rising Sun battery manager reports for the month of March as follows: —"During March we milled 260 tons for a return of £B7O ss, and cvanided 254 tons f0r~£299 17s 7d, giving a total yieeld of £ll7O 2s 7d. This works out at an average of £4 5s per ton. Colours of gold are occasionally seen in the ore from tho stopes on the Waiotahi battery level. April 17. Tho secretary of the -"Electric Company, reports that, owing to tho Kawarau River beino- in high flood, the dredge was closed down on the 14th inst.. till the river recedes sufficiently for dredging operations to be resumed. T-\LISMAN CONSOLIDATED COMPANY. AUCKLAND, April 16. Tho first dividend since the recent reconstruction of the Talisman Consolidated Company of a shilling per share, absorbing £17,250, has been declared. The total-divi-dends and bonuses since the reconstruction of the late company reach £1,064,720. and the total value of the bullion won from tho mine amounts to £2,666,957.

DREDGING RETURNS.

DUNEDIN STOCK EXCHANGE. Mining and dredging stocks were quiet on 'Change on Friday. Of the former, Waihi Grand Junctions remain at 13s 3d and 14s 6d. buyer and seller respectively. Investment stocks have been ireoly quoted since business -was resumed on Thursday. National Banks have advanced slightly, and Bank of New Zeaknds (both issues) are firm onprevious figures. There was a buyer of National Insurances at £2 14s 6d, and a seller of Standard Insurances at £1 17s 9d, but no &alcs were transacted. Union Steams (ord.) remain firm at £2 5s and £2 5s 3d, buyer and seller respectively. There was a buyer of Huddart, Parker's (ordinary) at £1 4s Sd, but sellers wanted £1 5s 3d. Notwithstanding the unsettled conditions now prevailing, Westport Coal Company's and WcstportStockton'a (ordinary) have both remained steady, the former advancing on Thursday's quotations. Milburn Lime and Cements are also firm, and there was a buyer of New Zealand Portland Cements (ordinary) at 12s, with a seller at 13s. Oamaru Woollens continue in de<mand at £1 8s 6d, and Bruce Woollens at £1 3s, but no sellers quoted for these stocks. Business was very quiet on 'Change on Monday. There was no demand for Waihis, for which sellers asked £1 14s 6d, nor for Mount Lyells, with a seller at £1 7s 3d. Banking and insurance stocks were both fairly steady. Union Steams continue firm, and a parcel of this stock changed hands at £2 ss. There was a demand for HuddartParkers (ord.) at £1 4s 9d, but ■ sellers wanted £1 5s 3d. Westport Coals were sought at £1 7s, with a seller at £1 Bs. There was a buyer of Dominion Rubbers at £1 16s, but no seller came forward. Mosgiel Woollens were sought at £4 3s, and Oarnaru Woollens (ord.) at £1 8s 6d, but ho seller came forward in either case. There was a buyer of New Zealand Drug Company's (£2 paid) at £2 8s 6d, but no seller, and a seller of Whitcombe and Tombs at £6 6s, but there was no demand for this stock.
