PROBLEM 4323. By D. A. Beodie, Dunedin Black.

White. White to play and win. This is .an end-game which occurred in the Qtago Club, when White only drew. GAMES. A few highly interesting games played by correspondence between Mr Leo J. Long, Wellington, N.S.W., and Mr Jas. J. Brennan, Ashfield, Sydney, are here given. They were contributed to the Weekly Times by Mr Brennan. Game 3493—" Denny."

(Notes and variations by Mr Brennan.) (a) After this move some interesting situations arise. (b) Not only relievos the pressure, but gives White a good ending. (c) 21 25, 80 21, 22 26, 9 6, and Black has a difficult end-game. Variation 1. In another game Mr Long varied here thus:

(d) Seems to save Black's game. (e) 27 23, 18 27, 26 23, 11 IS, 23 5, is interesting.—"Whilter."

(a) Against Jewitt, A. Jordan played 16 20 with a drawn result; text seems much stronger. (b) This evidently loses. "What is "White's 'best ? (c) Seems nothing better.

* A pretty game.—"Whilter." (a) A powerful and dangerous attack. (b) Some years ago, in a simultaneous exhibition at Sydney, Richard Jordan, late world's champion, against J. D. Gallagher, completed the take here by 24 15, and succumbed as follows:

(c) The champion allows Gallagher to complete a fine win in an artistic manner. (d) 2? 24 is the safest play at this stage, and draws. —"Whilter."

(e) Looks like the loser; 26. 23 is orthodox play for the draw, although Black has perhaps the better side. —"Whilter." DRAUGHTS ITEMS. Otago Club.—The meetings of the club are fairly well attended, those who do attend finding keen enjoyment in the practices. Visitors are always welcome. Mr D. A. Brodie is progressing favourably since his accident, and in a few weeks anticipates resuming his duties.
