THE LIQUOR TRADE.

(By Cable.) * The Central News asserts positively ihat the Government does not contemplate the nationalisation of the liquor trade during the war, owing to the trade's complicated organisation, the cost, and probable hostility in the House of Commons to the proposal as controversial. It adds_ that the Treasury has been minutely inquiring into the trade's financial basis, but this is more likely to be connected 'with taxation proposals. Meanwhile there is every probability that there will be a further limitation of drinking facilities and the utilisation of foodstuffs used for brewing. The Liquor Control Board prohibits the salo of whisky, brandy, rum, or gin unless it lias been reduced to 30 degrees underproof, representing a further 5 per cent. reduction in strength.
