PROTECTING SUEZ CANAL.

_ Twelve hundred Turkish prisoners arrived at Cairo on December 29. They ara ill-clothed and barefooted, their ages ranging from 18 to 50 years. Sir Douglas Haig has telegraphed tc General Murray his congratulations on th« great success at El Arish, and expressing Ids hopefulness for tho new year. Wirei have also been exchanged between the Expeditionary Forces. A 50-inch (broad) gauge railway, from the canal, yesterday reached El Arish. Tha last 15 miles were constructed in 15 days. This is a remarkable performance, considering that tho material was brought for 100 miles, and that 1000 men with horses and camels had to be provisioned from tha canal.
