RACING IN NEW ZEALAND.

D.J.O. SUMMER MEETING. First Day—Tuesday, December 26,

# Iho Dunedin Jockey Club commenced it* summer mooting in fine weather, butt a fairly strong breeze did not assist timemaking in tho .short events. The attendance was fairly largo, and tho card provided eomo interesting racing, although not many races provided close finishes. The track was on tile hard side, and tho time put up in the principal event closely approached the track record of 2min 33 2-sseo hold by Flora Macdonald. Speculation did not seem particularly brisk in the ear.ly part of tho clay, but improved at tho finish. The total amounted to £17,978 10s, as against last year's total of £18,480. The shrinkage could bo partially accounted for by the poor field in the two-year-old race, while a largo number of dilatory bettors wore shut out on t> •* second last race. Tho war tax amounted to £lOl 12s 6d. Second Day—Wednesday, Decembeb 27. The Dunedin Jockey Club concluded its meeting in fine weather. A showery .and somewhat threatening morning did not look too inviting, but the attendance ran to a goodly muster for the off day. Tho card provided some very interesting racing, and close finishes between the majority of the placed horses were quite tho order of tho day. Tho track was again on the hard side, but the first day's racing had taxed the soing near the rails. The sum of £15.577 was put through tho machine for the day, as compared with £17.225 10s for the corresponding day last year. Tlio war tax on the day's turnover was £350 lis 6d. The total investments f6r the meeting came to £33.555 10s, as against £35.705 10s for the summer meeting of 1915. Tho fact that on each day there were three starters only in one of the events must have affected the totalisator turnover. The general tax on the meeting amounted to £869 14s lOd; the tax on dividends to £755 4s. and the tax on stakes to £34;— total, £1658 18s lOd.
