Absolute prohibition came into force in Newfoundland on January 1. Forty-six women were burned to death by the destruction of the female mental hospital of St. Ferdinand, in Megantib County. Canada. The fire occurred at night time, and an uncontrollable panic seized the inmates, many of whom leaped from, high windows, whilo others crouched near tho window until they were incinerated. The atmospheric temperature was 20dcg below zero, and tho hydrants were consequently frozen. The' Hon. James Allen. Acting Prime Minister, through his Excellency Lord Liverpool and the Secretary of State for the Colonies, has sent by cable New Year's greetings to the Mikado of Japan, the King- of Serbia, the King of Montenegro, the Czar of Russia, the President of the French Republic, the King of Belgium, the people of Portugal, the Kings of Italy and Rumania. Lord Liverpool received grc-ati/igs from the Governor-general of Australia, and replied to these, adding an assurance that New Zealand troops were proud to be associated with those of tho Commonwealth of Australia in support 01 all that ifi right and just.
