One of the recruits for the Twenty-fourth Reinforcements, who Ims enlisted at Feilding, is Mr G. Smith, a well-known athlete, rider, and shot. His record for shearing is 260 sheep, for the hop, step, and jump 44ft 9m, and high jump sft 6|in. At the last Palmerston Show his services as a rider were in such keen demand that he rodo eight out of 14 horses in one competition, and throughout the jumping contests ho rode over 295 fences without accident. Two members of the Maori contingent who went from this district have the distinction of gaining- the Military Cross—namely, Corporal T. P. (Sonny) Sydney, of To Karaka. and Sergeant Rotoatara, son of Kingi Rotoatara, of Wairoa (says the Poverty Bay Herald). Both the recipients of this recognition of gallant conduct accompanied the first Maori contingent.
