WEEK'S MINING NEWS

December 28. The last report of the manager of tho Waihi Extended mine states that the full eitent of the deposit of molybdenite recently cut in the sinking of the shaft has not yet been ascertained. As far as the manager is able to say, tho molybdenite is in p seam of comparatively soft quartz, not uniformly distributed, but occurring m patches, A very small part of the length of the deposit has been exposed, and the shaft timber is also in the way. The manager is hopeful that the general course of the scam will cause it to cross into the shaft, as all tho other leaders encountered have done. At present it is dipping away, but this is possibly on account of a local bulge. December 29. The syndicate, which is a local one, has been engaged for the past month prospecting and carrying out developmental worli on a lode formation 22ft wide, discovered on the surface, and it has been driven on for 160 ft. The lode, when penetrated, gave an average width of sft. About 46ft of backs is available. Tho property gives excellent results at the depth mentioned. _ The syndicate has installed a very primitive appliance for the treatment of the ore, which consists of a three-head battery. Twenty-two tons from the lower levels put through the battery gave the excellent result of eight bags of tin dressed (up to 70 per cent.), and six bags seconds, which would give an assay result of 45 per cent. tin.
