WITH THE ITALIANS.
Italian official reports state: Enemy patrols attacking' south-cast of Goriza were driven off. On the Carso front, southward of Montfait, we strengthened our line by means of a surprise advance to a depth o'f 300 metres. r rhere is great artillery activity on the whole Italian front. General Cadorna has granted the military chaplains a fortnight's Christmas leave. Italy has agreed to the export to Switzerland of 20 wagons of eggs monthly. A NAVAL FIGITT. A "Rome naval communique states that several enemy ships on the ni'gnt of rhe 2.3 rd inst. attacked small guardships in the Otranto Canal. French destroyers espied them, and a sharp engagement ensued. Tho enemy loss is not known. A French destroyer and one guardship ivcro slightly damaged. Another vers ; on of the Otranto fight states that an Austrian squadron endeavoured to force tho strait, but French destroyers came to tho rescue of tho patrols. Subsequently tho Italian and allied naval units partook in a violent duel. Tho onemy* escaped in the darkness.
