WAITAHUNA SHOW

The thirty-sixth annual show under the auspices of the Wa'itahuna Farmers' Club was held on the club grounds, Waitahuna, on Wednesday, under very favourable weather conditions. The attendance was good. £l7 being taken at the gate, an increase of £3 on the amount taken the previous year. The entries also showed an improvement, the total number received being 225, as compared with 187 in 1915. On the whole the show was a success. A couple of pipers were present, and the strains ol their pipes at. frequent intervals during the afternoon added considerably to the enjoyment of the spectators. The officers of the club all worked hard for the success of the show, and the club is to be complimented upon the thoroughness of its arrangements and the smoothness with which all the details were carried cut. The judges were: Messrs Walter Brockio, Taieri (cattle);- Simon Fleming, Crookston (draught horses); Win. Cutler, Crookston (light horses); Walter Murray, Warepa (sheep and dogs); and Miss Kempshell, Maungatua (dairy produce and home industries). CATTLE. For so important an agricultural district the number of entries in this section was rather disappointing, particularly in tne puro-brcd classes. Ayrshircs were not represented, while in shorthorns only live exhibits were forward. In this division Air T. Corry was iilaced' first in class for cow (any age) with a very good animal, while Mr A Howe secured' the pink ticket in the dry cow class. Two yearling oulls were shown. Air H. S. Ridley securing the award with a good typical animal. There Avas better competition in crossbreds, in which Air T. Corry was the most successful exhibitor, securing first prize for cow (any age), heifer (two years), and best twoi dairy cows, and also third prize for dairy cow and yearling heifer. Air T. J. Crozier secured first and second prizes for yearling heifers; Air W. Auld was placed first in class for tradesmen's or cottar's cow; and Airs K. Ryan scored in three-year-old heifers. HORSES. Some very good specimens of draughts were shown, though in no class were the entries strong. Air J. Kendall's Captain Bancor had no opposition in the aged stallion class. Mr R. Al'Corkindalo was the most successful competitor in this section,' securing first prize for entire colt or gelding (two years), fitly (two years), ycld mare, pair of marcs or geldings, best Clydesdale animal on the ground, and best three-horse team in regular work; also the special prize for most points in draught stock. Air J. K. Brown was awarded first prize for brood mares with a very nice matronly animal, second prizes for ycld mare, pair of mares or geldings, and three-horse team. _ The other prize-takers were D. Al'Corkindalo (first for three-year-old fillies and second for best Clydesdale animal on the ground), J. Crane (second for brood mare), and A. Montgomery (third for pair of mares or geldings). In the light horse division, in which there was fairly good competition, Air Fergus Thompson was the most successful exhibitor, securing first' prize for 14-stone hack, mare, or gelding suitable for infantry, and buggy maro or gelding. Mr George Bartlctt was placed first in the 11-stono class, and Aliss Shore had a walk-over in the class for lady's hacks. The other prizetakers in these classes were: F. J. Bishop, J. F.- Aluir, W. Crane, and J. Linklater. Messrs Herbert and Co. and W. Alackenzie worn the successful exhibitors in tho 7£cwt and 15cwt spring-carters, and Air R. Hooker in ponies (14 hands). SHEEP.

The pure-bred classes wore very poorly represented. T. Davidson was the only exhibitor in merino, James Cutler in Border Leicester, and 8. Murdoch in Romnoy Marsh. There was, however, keen competition in the crossbred classes, and the quality of the various pens shown was creditable to the district. ' T. Corry was the most successful competitor, winning the first prize for pen two ewe hoggets, 4-tooth ewe (strong wool), 10 crossbred hoggets suitable for wool or mutton, five crossbred hoggets, three fat lambs suitable for freezing, and three fat lambs (bred by local exhibitor), also several 6econd and third prizes. J. Donaldson was

also a successful competitor, being placed lirst for two ewe hoggets (line wool), second for 4-tooth owe (strong wool), second and third for five crossbred hoggets, and third for three iat lambs (locally bred). Other winners in this section were T. Davidson, 11. M'Lcan, J. Crane, ami M. Ryan. DAißi' PRODUCE AM) HOME INDUSTRIES. In tho butter classes Airs A. J. Bartlett was the most successful competitor, gaining four first pries—viz., 2ib iresh butter (non-separator), 2lb powdered butter, 21b fresh butter (lodged oa December 19), and 2ib fresh butter (separator or nonseparator). Mrs F. M'Cartney was successful in the class for 21b fresh butter for thoso who had never previously taken a prize, and Miss M. A. Barton in salt butter. Other prize-winners were: Mrs J. Littlo (second 21b non-separator fresh butter), Mrs H. B. Crazier (second 2ib powdered butter and 21b fresh butter, separator or non-separator), Mrs A. Barron (second 51b salt butter), and Mrs J. Burns (second 21b fresh butter lodged on December 19, and third 2Lb non-separator fresh butter, 21b fresh butter, separator or non-separator and 51b salt butter). Mi's Bennington waa the only exhibitor of home-made cheese. She was also successful with her exhibit of unsmoked pork ham. Mrs J. Rose was tho only exhibitor of home-cured rolled bacon. There was good competition in the baking classes, the first prize-takers being Mrs R. Blair (oat cake and sponge sandwich), Miss A. M. Rose (home-made loaf), Mrs J. Burns (girdle and oven scones), Mrs W. Low (pikelets), Mrs J. O. Browne (shortbread), A. E. Wilde (black currants), J. H. Lucas (gooseberries), Miss S. M'Corkindale (table and hand bouquets), T. Cony (extracted honey), and Mrs J. Rose (duck and hen eggs). COMPETITIONS. The competitions, which, to the majority of the spectators, are the most interesting part of tho programme, were well supported. In the pony jumping the three competitors jumped well, and it was only after a number of turns that the event was finally won by Mr Hawker's pony (ridden by Master Boleman). Tho hack jumping in which there were seven contestants, went to Mr S. Bishop, whoso horse jumped very consistently. Mr J. S. Blackie won tho high jump, Mr Hawker's and Mrs E. Ryan's ponies being placed second and third, and tho stockman's race (four entries) was won by Mr 11. Flett, with J. MTlardio second.
