TIMARU PATRIOTIC FETE.
UTMAIIU, January 1. Tho chief attraction tor the New Year Holiday was the Caledonian patriotic fete, which was hold instead of sports, in the Show Grounds. Rain in tho morning spoiled tho procession in town and affected tho attendance, which, however, was large In the afternoon. Tho Governor and Lady Liverpool visited tho fete, which was opened by Lord Liverpool. The chiof item was fcho election of queen from tho four candidates representing tho counties and limaim borough. Tho following is tho re-
sult of the election: —-Miss Airini Rhodes, daughter of Mr R. H. Rhodes, BlueclifFs, cash amount, £10,159; Mackenzie and Levels Counties, £8109; Geraldino County, £6955; Timaru Borough, £2538. Tho total proceeds are not yet available. Tho whole amount is to bo divided among lied Crcs3 and Patriotio Societies
