THE POSITION IN EGYPT.
CAPTURE OF EL ARISH. The Times correspondent at Cairo reports that improved conditions exist in Egypt as compared with 1915. The Senussi movement is broken, and tho Turks' defensive positions are far behind those previously held. Tho commercial position is excellent. Trade is flourishing, the people arc prosperous and contented', and the German-made influence is practically eliminated. Egypt, official: Wo .have occupied El Arish after it had been two years in the enemy's hands. The enemy had evidently intended to offer a stubborn resistance, as they had constructed strong trenches in a position at Masaid, covering El Arish; but tho rapidity of our advance completely upset their calculations and forestalled tho arrival of the enemy's reinforcements. The enemy abandoned tho position on the night of December 19, and retreated east-south-east. The recapture of El Arish is a serious blow to the Turks.
Our aircraft dropped a ton of high explosives on an enemy concentration at jiaghdabas, causing many casualties. They attacked Bcorsheba and Jafa, and seriously damaged an important railway bridge at Tcleisdria, northwards of Beershcba.
