AUCKLAND TOPICS.

By TtiHCA.

Since I wrote last week not a '.>reat deal has happened ni connection wicn the Cup meeting, and it can cercamiy Du mat there is notning sensational to chronicle. As tins is tiie iast opportunity i shall have ot' commenting on tiie big race--the Cup will ue over uet'oru my next letter Appears m print,—l shall confine my remarks mostly to Chose horses now at Ellerslie. Ot course, this letter is written 12 days before tae meeting, and there is likely to be many changes between now and Boxing Day.

The Cup at tne present moment lias an acceptance of 16; but there is another payment, to-niglit, but it is not likely to aiiect the field at all. To deal with tho candidates as they appear in the handicap, Chortle comes first, anu ho has plenty oi I'riends, aitliougn it is a big task 10 set a bores in asking him to win a hard race like the Auckland Cup with 9.0 in the saddle. Good tnougli he is, he will no doubt find the task beyond him, and perhaps a shorter journey than two miles would be more to his liking. One fact is certain, and it is that the big Multilid gelding is very well, as he carried 9.13, and was only beaten a head in tho Woodvillo Handicap on the 7th inst. Next comes Colonel bout 8.6, without doubt i?he best and most consistent handicap horse in Auckland. He has several good race- to his credit, and already this season has won twice out of three starts, his victories being gained in the Avondalo Cup, in which he caried 8.11, and beat Housewife aim Cliort.e amongst others, and he also won the Kinff Edward Memorial, one mile and a-half, at Eldeslie last month, beating El Gallo, Lady Penury, and others. That Colonel Soult can stay lie has demonstrated, as he ran fourth in tho Auckland Cup last year, and since* then won the Wanganui Cup, one mile and three-quarters. Colonel Soult appear- to be better now than ever, and cannot be left out when a final decision is being arrived at. Following the Colonel are Slullingar and Ardenvohr, each 8.2, who ran third and first respectively in the New Zealand Cup, and have therefore proved that they can stay. Mullingar is both looking and galloping well; but Ardenvhor has not made friends since coming north, and both times he has galloped with .John Barleycorn the latter has been easily the better. Next on the list is The Toff 8.1. As a winner of tho C.J C. Derby and Canterbury Cup he cannot be ignored; but it must not be forgotten that really good three-year-olds in Treadmill. Counterfeit, and Reputation tried hut could not win the Auckland Cup, and few would care to say that Tho Toff is better than the trio mentioned. Counterfeit failed to gain a place, but won every other race she contested that season, while Treadmill and Reputation each had to put up with second place. Following The Toff is Mare Antonv 7.11; but as he has not yet arrived, I cannot say anything regarding his chance. Lady Penury 7.10 has not been galloping well at all, and the fact of her wearing bandages looks suspicious. Then comes John Barleycorn 7.8, and I must confess that I have a strong liking for his chance. A good winner of many races in the south, including the Fendalton Handicap at Riccarton last month, he appears well treated at 7.8. His condition is sohel, and twice during the week he has galloped very attractively, particularly this (Thursday) morning, when he gave Ardenvhor an easy beating over a mile in I.4B—not a bad gallop, and done well. John Ban >ycorn is one I am bound to have on my side. Blackall 7.8 is one of the favourites, but he has not yet arrived, though it must be said for him that he ran a fine race last year when Balbao beat him a head. On the 7.10 mark are Wishful. Bjorncborg, and Prince Merriwee. and. though they have done nothing of late that would entitle them to consideration for a race of tin's description, there are indications that Wishful will take a power of beating. I had almost omitted to mention Depredation 7.5, who must have a chance, if only on account of his track work, which has been particularly good of late. He left to-day to contest the Te Awamutu Cup. which event looks a good thing for him. Below 7.0 there are El Gallo 6.13, San Sebastian 6.8, and AlteraLion 6.7, and of the trio El Gallo should run a good race, not that he is brilliant, but that he is a genuine stayer, and will be still plodding along when many of his opponents have lost their wind. In a nutshell, the contest promises to be a good race. The Raihvav Handicap, the second ' leg of the double, is admittedly "hard/' and at least a dozen of the candidates have a large following. With Tete-a-tete, Chakwana. Bhneter. King Lupin, Hyttua, Downham, Shrill. Menelaus, and others engaged the winenr will take some finding. Of the Ancklanders I fancy the preferred of the stablcmates Downham and Oarlysian, but under no consideration would I endeavour to find tho winner in one. Of tho many two-year-old races to be decided at the meeting I shall be surprised if the local juveniles win one between the lot of them. A mare who will be worth watching at tho meeting is Lady Glen, whom II French is paying a deal of attention to. So far she has done nothing wonderful with the colours up, but her turn is not far off, and she will win in good company too. Tabasco shows pace on the training track, and any race up to mile might be well within him. Though Arran did not accept in the Railway, ho is doing good work, and may be

amongst the prize-money bcforo the meeting is through. Another worth noting is Carlysian, who, though only a hack, will keep the best of them busy when he steps out over a short course. Goldfirc shows signs of lameness after working, arc! does not look to have a winning chance in anything. Prince Merriwee is standing up to his work, which has not been of the type that would suggest his winning the Cup. A hack that may run well before the meeting is through is "Whitehall, who is galloping fairly well. Ayah may be worth remembering in the Shortland Plato if started. •Cheloma is a good sort that can be ticked off as a likely winner shortly. This is ono of W. G. Stead's team. Guiding Way, who won four races at Takapuna, has done well since, and is bound to have a large following when he starts. If Downham misses the Railway he may win another race, aa he is very well at present. Pacific Slope is amiss, and will not start at the meeting. Lady Penury has not been galloping well enough to win the Cup, and has gone out of favour. Alteration, who is in the Cup at 6.7, may not be quite seasoned enough to win such a hard race, but a minor event may fall to him at the meeting. RAGING IN NEW ZEALAND. NEW BRIGHTON TROTTING MEETING.
