OWAKA SHOW

The annual show of the Owaka Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held on Wednesday, and attracted a largo attendance. The gate receipts established a record, the amount received from this sourco being £4B, which was £lO in excess of the sum taken last year. In addition, 30 new members were enrolled on the ground, bringing the list of members to a standard which might be envied by similar societies in larger districts. The number of exhibits constituted a record, and the qualify of the stock warranted complimentary comment from the judges. The officials are deserving of great credit for the manner in which the show was conducted, and particularly the secretary and Mr W. Adam (press steward). CATTLE. There was a good entry of cattle, all of which, with tho exception of the crossbred section, were true to type. In the shortnorn stcmou Mr G. S. Wilson (Glenornaru) was first for bull, three years and over, with Mr John Ford and Mr D. M. Pea second and third respectively. Mr G. Johnstone (Tahakopa) was first lor bull, two years, and Mr John Cook (Owaaa) second, there being but two entries. In the yearling bull class, for winch there were two entries, Mr T. Barr was awarded first prize. Mr Johnstone secured lirst and second awards in the class for cow, four years and over, in milk, and lor cow. four years or over, apparently in calf, he again gained tho principal prizes. The only other competitor in this class was Mr Wilson. These two exhibitors, having the only entries, were awarded first and second prizes respectively in the class for heifers, three years, in milk. For heifer, two years, Mr A. Bradfield (Owaka) was awarded first and champion, Mr Johnstone receiving second and third prizes. In the yearling heifer class Mr Johnstone was the only exhibitor, and he received a highly commended certificate. The Ayrshire classes were almost wholly confined to a competition between Mr John Campbell (Tahakopa) and Mr T. Barr, the only other competitors being Mr J. K. Weir (Stirling). Mr D. Henderson, and Mr C. R. Eason. Mr Barr secured first and third for pairs of cows and first arid second for cows four years "r over, in milk, first arid third for cow and two of her progeny, first and champion for heifer three years, first and second for heifer two years. Mr Campbell •was first for bull three years or over, bull two years, and first and second for yearling bull. Ho was second for pair of cows, and third for cow four years or over, in milk, first and second for dry cow four years or over, second for cow and two of her progeny, second and third for heifer three years, in calf or in milk, and first and .second for yearling heifer. Mr Eason secured a second in tho class for hull three years or over. Thoro was only one entry in tho Jersey and Aldcrney section, this being in the yearling heifer class. Mr A. M. Galbraith was the owner of the exhibit, which was awarded first prize, Messrs J. F. Andrews and Sons (Tahakopa), W. _ M'Kegg (Tahakopa), F. B. Haupt-floisch, and T. Barr were the only exhibitors of Holstein cattle, and the quality of their exhibits was the subject of much favourable comment. Messrs

Andrews and Sons secured first awards for bull three years and over, first and second for cow four years and over, first for heifer three years, in milk, and second for heifer two years. Mr M'Kegg was fust (unopposed) in tlie yearling bull class, and h. c. for heifer two years, while Mr Hauptfleisch was second for heifer three years, in mill;:. Mr T. Ban? secured first prize with his two-year-old heifer, and a similar award (unopposed) in the yearling heifer class. The crossbred section was not a good one, and the judge, in explaining that there was not a real crossbred in tho section, said that farmers who went in for the. cross should make certain that their animals wore bred on tho first or second grade—that is to sav, not more than a first or second remove from tho particular breeds they desired to cross. There were nine entries in the class for cows four years or over, in milk, first honours going to Mr A. M. Galbraith (Tahakopa) and second and third to Mr T. Barr. Messrs G. Gorman (Hunt's road) and A. Galbraith were the only exhibitors in the three-year-old milking heifer class, the former securing first and tho latter second and third awards. Mr Gorman was awarded first and second prizes for dry throo-year-old heifer. Mr Galbraith was first for two-year-old heifer, with Mr Barr second and Mr Gorman third, in a ring of nine entries. Mr D. M. Fca was first in the yearling heifer class, with Mr Galbraith and Mr Gorman second and third respectively in _a ring of six. There were eight entries in the class for the best pair of cows. Mr Galbraith securing first and third, and Mr T. Barr second. Mr Hauptfleisch was awarded first prize for best cottar's cow, while in a field of three Mr Gorman was first and Mr Barr second for the best dairy cow owned by a supplier to tho Taieri and Peninsula Milk Supplv Company. Tho entry of fat stock -was confined to three in the fat cow class, Mr J. D. Calder being placed first, Mr A. Bradfield second, and Mr John Ford third. SHEEP.

There was a fair entry of sheep, but the exhibits, while being of good quality, were not brought out in a condition requisite for show purposes. In Mr A. Bradfield scored five firsts, four seconds, and two thirds, while Mr A. North was credited with n first, a second, and a third. Mr G. Gillespie scored a first and a second, and Mr G. Johnstone two thirds. The only other exhibitor was Mr W. Grant (Owaka). Messrs James Logan, Andrew M'lntosh. Donald M'Neill, T. Barr. G. Johns!one, and John Ford were the exhibitors of Eormioj Marsh. For ram, four-tooth or over (four entries), the awards were: Mr M'Neill 1, Mr Logan 2 and 3. Ram, two -tooth (one entry)—Mr Logan 1. Two two-tooth rams (one entry)—Mr Lcgan 1. Ewe, four-tooth, with lamb at foot (two entries) —Mr Logan I. Mr M'Neill 2. Ewe, two-tooth or under (five entries)—Mr M'Neill 1, Mr Logan 2, Mr Johnstone 3. Two ewes, two-tooth or under (four entries) —Mr Logan 1, Mr Barr 2, Mr Ford 3. Most typical Romney sheep (seven entries) —Mr M'Neill 1. In crossbred."? Mr Logan was first for pen of two strong woolled ewes, his being the only entry, while in the pen of two finewoollcd ewes, any age, in milk, Mr Bradfield's was the only exhibit, and it was awarded first, prize. For pen of throe hoggets, Mr Looran was first, Mr Bradfield second, and Mr D. Henderson third, these Deing the only exhibitors. Mr T. Mnguincss was first and second for the only pen of three heaviest shorn wethers, and Mr Bradfield, unopposed, secured first prize for the pen of three shorn wethers, suitable for freezing. Tlier-j was more, oomnotition in the class for pen of three fat lambs, bred by exhibitor, there bein<r six entries. The first prize was won by Mr W. Grant, with Mr Bradfield second and Mr A. M'C'alman third. DOGS. In the dog section, Mr G. Johnston was first for rough-haired collie, Mr J. Boyle first for smooth-h;iircd collie, and Mr W. 11. Craigio first for bearded collie, Mr J. S. Taylor being second and Mr Johnstone third in the last-named class. HORSES.

The draught horses were a fairly good lot, but the entries were not large. Mr T. Maginness (president of the association) was one of the most successful exhibitors. He scored in the entire class unopposed, and again in the class for geldings throe years and upwards and two-year-old filly, while he was second for best pair of maros or geldings. Mr Geo. Johnstone was the only exhibitor in two-year-old colt or gelding class, but was awarded first prize for a fine animal, while for dry mare, four years and upwards, he was first and second unopposed, and first in a field of three for best pair of mares or geldings. Private Morris (on service) was first for brood mare, with Mr John Ford second and Mr T. Barr third. Private Morris was the winner of Mr Maginness's prize for the best foal by Major Stewart. Mr W. H. Craigie was first unopposed for three-year-old filly and first for best colt or fillv, Mr T. Barr, tho other exhibitor, being second in the latter class. Mr Barr was second in the gelding class to Mr T. Maginness. Mr Johnstone was awarded the championship for having tho best Clydesdale in the show. There were four entries in the springdray horse section, tho result being: Mr For spring-cart horse Mr Barr was first, and tho only other exhibitor (Mr A. Guthrie) second. There was one entry for best tradesman's turnout, and the prize went to Mr Aherno. while Mr Barr was first unopposed for best milkman's turnout.

The hacks and roadster horses shown worn a very poor lot as a whole, this being largely due to the fact, that breeders are crossing their mares with any class of sire, so long as the fee charged is small. The result is that the number of ungainly and unsightly gaitpd horse? is increasing each year. Mr T. L. Morrison was first in the stallion class, with Mr Tilson 2. and Mr Pefrrio 3. For mare in foal <n- with foal at foot there were three entries. Mr Jas. Morris being first and Mr A North second. Mr Wright was first in the two-year-old colt, gelding, or filly class, and .Mr North was first in the yearling colt or filly class, with Messrs Andrew.', and Sons second. Mr R. Honlistori was first and second for 15-stono hack, and Mr A. M. Macdonakl third. The last-mentioned was first and third for 13-stone hack, with Mr F. Arson second, in a field of five Private O. A. Kerr (on service) won I lie Illstone hack prize, with Mr A. M. Maerlonald second. Other awards were: Ladies hackMr A. Macdonald 1. Mr W. The strongest section in the show was the dairy and domestic produce section, and the judge (Miss Kempshcll) said she had never seen a better display of home-made goods and household produce than that shown by Miss Jean Barr. For export cheese the Tarara Dairy Factory was first and Taieri and Peninsula Company 2. Mrs A. Skey was first for fresh butter, with Mrs A. Wilson second, Mrs B. Hauptflcich third, and Mrs R. Mudie h.c. For powdered (non-separator) butter Miss A. Wilson was first, and Miss L. Moffat second. In the powdered separator butter class Airs Skey was first. Mrs Wils'.n second, and Mrs Mudie and Mrs M. Latta (equal) 3. Mrs Mudie was first for 51b of salt butter in crock, with Mrs Hauptflcich second, and Mrs Skey third. In the best horne-mado loaf class Mrs Landreth was first, Mrs C. M'Donald second, and Mrs Wilson third; oatcake—Mrs D. Neil 1, Mrs M'Donald 2, Miss Landreth 3; best home-made girdle scones —Mrs W. E. Wright 1, Miss Jean Barr 2 and 3, Mrs J. Todd h c; homemade oven scones —Mrs Wright 1, Miss Barr 2 and 3; trav of pikelets—Miss B. M'Master 1, Mrs M'Donald 2, Mrs J. Walker 3; shortbread—Miss A. Wilson 1. Mrs J. D. Sim 2. Mrs D. Neil 3 ; heaviest dozen eggs—Miss Barr 1, Mrs Skey 2; heaviest dozen duck eggs —Mrs D. Dewar 1, Mrs J. Friend 2; best display of homemade goods and household display—Miss Barr 1.
