BLIGHT ON POTATOES IN AUSTRALIA.
o i rm ui * • Irish blight in potatoes has appeared in South Australia, Tasmania, and Queensland, while there are suspicious circumstances in New South Wales. The wet season is congenial to its development, and Victorian farmers should be on the watch for the pest, resorting to spraying as a preventive. The Launceston Courier says that the trouble is very prevalent over a widespread area in Tasmania. In some cases whole paddocks have turned black, and the disease has even reached the tuber. A disquieting feature is that if the early crops have been attacked In this way it is hardly likely that the late ones will escape, unless there is a marked change in the weather. The blight is in evidence in the other States as well, continues the paper, and the possibilities are that later on potatoes will reach a high price, and any outlay in the way of protecting the crop by saving even a portion of it will no doubt bo money well spent.
