An inquest was hold at Bluff on the 6th inst., before Mr G. Cruickehank, S.M., touching the death of John Christopher Anglem Waitiri, 20 years of age, who was lost overboard from a launch in Foveaux Strait. A verdict of death by drowning was returned. The coroner added that the efforts of Charles To Au to rescue deceased in a heavy sea were praiseworthy in a very high degree, To Au having exercised judgment, pluck, and daring under exceptional circumstances. When addressing the pupils at the "breakup" of the Gore High School on the Bth, tlio Hon. J. A. Hanan said he had receiver! a report from a medical school inspector to tho effect that in one part of the country a number of children were suffering from defective sight. The doctor mentioned attributed tin's defect to the frequent attendance of children at picture shows. Ho hoped parents would note this fact. Tho weather has. been excessively hot during the past few days (says the Masterton correspondent of tho Dominion), reaching 86deg Fahr. on the 10th. Reports from outlying stations indicate that springs and water-courses have gone dry, and although thero is an abundance of feed, the shortage of water is being viewed by settlers with apprehension
