THE MAN WHO WENT.
Gone from unequal praise, from cold dispraise ; In trust of England's weal so went the mac , Who as her soldier for a splendid span Fought on her far-off fields; then paused to raise And arm her million sons. . . . Too poor our bays For brows like his. . . . Time's lustre shall declare His state who spared not; whom Time did not spare, Who, ripe in counsel, lived laborious days; Who, making answer to allied demand, Sped on the instant: happy warrior he! Death kindly claimed him from a stormy sea, Shrived, and absolved him from his high command. Such as he lived, a silent men he went, Great in his going, resolute, unspent. FOR MEN WHO GO. 11. His might remains: unclaimed by dusty death Through bugles now the old reveille's blown, For race is one, and, past resentments flown We close in battle with more vibrant breath, With hearts new-nerved, with hands more strong to hold Blood-purchased rights. Thus do wo stand to win Each conflict waged against insurgent sin, Against invading lust of land or gold. TJnburied loves from buried lovers spring. Earth's cerements shrink but sacrament remains To bless and consecrate nil loss, all gains, To bring to life a rarer blossoming, More love, more truth, serene? strength for toil. A larger vision, greater scorn for spoil. —Joyce Jocelvn licmucia, Auckland.
