DOMINION REVENUE

OYER ONE MILLION INCREASE IN EIGHT MONTHS. The following figures show the revenue for November, as compared with the same month of last year, and the revenue and expenditure for the eight months ended November 30, compared with the corresponding period of the 1915-16 financial year. "The revenue," states Mr Myers, "continues to retain the buoyancy which has characterised it throughout the year, the net increase over November, 1915, being £329,163; whilst the receipts for the eight months ended November 30 were £1,324,4-79 in excess of those for the corresponding period" of tho previous year. " Although tho expenditure for the eight months shows a net increase of £456.440 over that for the same period last yeai*, it must be remembered that the interest and sinking fund charges, as well as war pensions, are ever-increasing amounts, and, together with the payments on account of war bonus and other items included in tho heading 'Under Special Acts,' are responsible for £447,751 of the total increase. " New Zealand having embarked on a policy of self-reliance, it is her bounden duty to place herself, during the period of affluence through which she is passing, m such a position that she will not only cease to rely financially on the Mother Country, after the war, but that she will, on the contrary, be a source of strength to her, financially and economically. There are onlv two methods by means of which the dominion may be enabled to play her part worthily in the direction indicated. The first is by the utmost possible increase of output of' all the products that this country is capable of turning out in such abundance; and the second is by a corresponding decrease in the wasteful spending of money ■which might otherwise he set aside for saving purposes. It must be remembered that the loans raised in the dominion this year and last year have been subscribed for the specific purposes of the war and _ public, ■works respectively ; but recourse is Doing had to surplus deposits with the Post Office Savings Banks for other requirements, such as the purchase of Native lands, lands for settlement, lands for soldiers, and for the redemption of loans, etc.; all part of a policy with a direct bearing on the strengthening of our position economically.
