AUCKLAND. A fire in Messrs Lichtenstoin and Arnoldson's kauri srum store did damage estimated at £IOOO. The building did not sustain much damage, but the stock suffered severely. The insurances were:—Stock, £10,000; building, £3000; machinery, £550. Before Mr Dyer, S.M., at Tauranga, a man was fined £5 for offering to treat another. The magistrate remarked that tho next case that came before him would bo dealt with with the utmost severity. His Worship also remarked that he understood this was the first case of tho kind to come before a magistrate in the dominion. Messrs Wright. Stephenson, and Co., of Dunedin, have acquired the large grain and produce business of Messrs W. Gunson and Co., of Auckland. They have taken over the entire staff. Mr J. G. Gunson, Mayor of Auckland, has accepted the position of advisory director to the company in Auckland. WELLINGTON. The Appeal Court made an order absolute striking the name of Charles Edward Harden, of Auckland, off the roll of barristers and solicitors. The University of New Zealand has received a cablegram from the secretary of tho Rhodes Trust authorising the Selection Committee to select an additional Rhodes scholar at the next election in December. This is to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Lieutenant A. Hudson, last year's Rhodes scholar from Now Zealand, who was recently killed in action. As a result of the publication by certain newspapers of statements regarding the Dominion Boy Scouts' Council, to which exception is taken, it was unanimously resolved at the last monthly meeting of the Executive Committee to place the matter in the hands of the council's solicitor. MARLBOROUGH. Albert William Westrupp, John Carlson, and Fritz Reirsen, seamen on the steamer Opawa, pleaded guilty to several charges of cargo-broaching, and were committed to Wellington for sentence.
