PALMERSTOM NOTES.

(From Odu Own Correspondent.) PALMERSTON, October 9. A rumour that quinnat salmon have been caught near the mouth of the Shag River is entirely without foundation. Fishermen who frequently fish in that part of the river are certain that quinnat salmon have never been seen near the Shag. The Education Board lias decided to make extra rooms for the rector and teachers of the High Slchool by cutting offl parts of two of the class rooms which are too largo. This alteration was much needed, as the teaching staff had no place to go during the day when off duty for a while.

Whitebait has boon more than usually plentiful in the Bhasr River this season. Local fishermen have made some good hauls, and some Natives who are camped on the banks of the river have sent quantities a wav to the markets. The flags were again flying last week in honour of Private Drummond, of Palmerston, who died of wounds received in Franco. ■ Word has also been received that several other local volunteers have been wounded at the Somme. An up-to-date milking machine plant is being erected by Mr T. Muir, of Waihomo Mains, near Palmerston. The plant is to bo capable of milking 40 cows per hour. The machines are to be driven by a 4£ horse-power steam engine and a corn crusher and saw bench will also be connected with it.
