October 0. —The past few days have been very bright, sunny days, enabling the farmers to sow seeds and generally improve their farms. Lambs are doing splendidly. Farewell Social. —On September 29 a social as a farewell to those who were leaving- for Trentham was held in the Coronation Hall. Mr W. Christie (chairman) gave a short patriotic speech. Mr Richards, of Invercargill, gave three- solos; Mr H. De Laurie also sang a solo. Mr John Milne in a very feeling speech presented a safety razor and fountain pen each to Messrs J. M'Taggart, C. Re id, and F. Kydd. The recipients suitably replied. Mr W. Christie acted as M.C. The musicians were Messrs H. De Laurie (piano) and Soper (accordion). Dancing was indulged in. Mr Mitchell prepared a good supper, which was handed round. The social closed by the singing of the National Anthem

and "Auld lang sync." Final Leave.—Messrs C. Collins, James M'Donald, and Stanley M'lver are here from Trentham on final leave, to say farewell before leaving- with reinforcements for the front.

Red Cross "Work. —The Waikaia. Red Cross Branch met at Mrs T. Stirling's residence, when -there were present—Mesdamcs Pinckney, Crowley, Handyside, Lee, Mutch, Moffitt, jun., E. Kadl'ord, Stirling, and Mis 3 Milne. The ladies enjoyed afternoon tea, which was kindly provided by Mrs Stirling and Mrs Mutch. One hundred and twentythree roller and five many-tail bandages were made. , „ .. Band of Hope.—ln the Churcn Had on Friday, Cth inst,, the Band of Hope was held There was a good attendance of children and their parents and friends. The Kev. "W. Haiti presided, and delivered a short address on Temperance. Solos were sung by Mrs Thomson. Misses M. Bruce, E. Wilson, E M'lver, Mrs Hain, Master T. White; duet Misses J. Moffitt and M. Cockerill; piano solos-Misses V. Ayson, M. Milne, and fi. Stewart; recitations—Mrs D \\ llscm, Misses M. Bruce, C. Cooper, C Allan, Mr j T M'Kenzie; readings, Mrs J. M Donald and 'Miss E. Stirling. Mr James Cooper proposed a vote of thanks to the performers.
