ALEXANDRA NOTES.
ALEXANDRA, July 21. The annual meeting 1 of the Alexandra branch of the Expansion League was hold on Wednesday evening, the Mayor (Mr Ashworth) presiding, when the secretary (Mr Black) presented a full report of tiro work the league had done, and particularly in the matter of pushing on the irrigation scheme from Mannherikia The report emphasises the need for strong pressure* being brought to bear upon ' the Public Works Department to expedite the work. Expedition is particularly necessary with the intake, which, through* some original error, it has now been found necessary to remove much higher up the river, necessitating the construction of a tunnel of about 2\ chains. No. 2 contract, which should have been completed in June, 1915, is still far from completion. There was a largo attendance of league members, and it was unanimously resolved to put a solid and united endeavour to secure the pushing on of this highly important work. The Mayor and Messrs C. E. Murphy, W. Duncan, 0. Weaver, and W. A. Bodkin all paid a tribute of well-deserved praise to Mr Black (the honorary secretary) for his energy and ability, and ho and the president were both unanimously re-elected. Messrs Weaver, Murphy, and W. Duncan were elected vice-presidents. An amenities committee was appointed to go into tho matter of town beautification, the members being Dr Gladstone and Messrs Uren, Poulson, Davidson. Murphy, Duncan, Ross. Hewitt, and Bodkin. The Alexandra Ladies’ Patriotic Association gave a splendid night's entertainment to returned and departing troopers last Monday night. Mayor Ashworth presiding. The weather is fairly cold, but exceedingly fine, and signs ot spring are already apparent in the rosebuds, etc.
