MELBOURNE, July 21

The employees of the State coal mine in Gippsland have ceased work as a result of being refused an increase in wages. SYDNEY, July 18. All the colliery mechanics at Maitland ceased work. Twelve collieries, employing over 4090 men, are affected. The employees at Brown's Minmi collieries received a fortnight's notice to quit, when the pits will be closed. July 19. All the collieries in the commonwealth affiliated with the Australasian Coal and Shale Employees Federation have decided to stop work for a day on July 27 in connection with the demand for an eight hours' day for all employees. July 20. Mass meetings of colliers at Maitland, Lambton West, Wallsend. and Wollongong carried resolutions protesting against the failure of the proprietors to grant an eight-hour " bank to kink " day or payment for overtime". July 21. Stop-work meetings of miners in the collieries throughout Australia passed motions protesting against the failure of the employers to grant an eight-hour clay and payment for overtime. The miners in the Maitland district have resumed work, the employers granting them a conference. [Messrs J. and A. Brown own all the collieries at Minmi. which is a town 14- miles from Newcastle.
